Dear Comics, (UPDATED)
Wednesday, January 25, 2012 # 5:43 pm # comicsmarket # 4 CommentsSome thoughts I had yesterday, summarized here since twitter’s not really the best venue for a longer contextual conversation:
comics: if 100,000 people read the superperson comic book, that is not the #comicsmarket. that is THE MARKET FOR THAT COMIC.

you are no more entitled to ANY PIECE OF THAT AUDIENCE than you are to any piece of the marketshare of red lobster. #comicsmarket

they are not “our” readers. no more than the audience for reggae is a shared market w/ classical music. #comicsmarket

@IvanBrandon what if we gave out free bibs

for the record: i am obviously against piracy. i’m just more against creators using it as a straw bogeyman for all their problems.
— Ivan Brandon (@IvanBrandon) January 26, 2012
i believe we should fight piracy. i just don’t believe it has anything at all to do with comics’ financial troubles.
— Ivan Brandon (@IvanBrandon) January 26, 2012
my point is if you’re out chasing the bogeyman of piracy because you think it’s gonna bring you $, maybe your time could be better spent.

And then after all of that a less polite point, but I’m going to post it anyway because I think it speaks to the idea of passing blame to theoretical villains vs taking responsibility:
oh hey also: if your book looks like dogshit, you don’t get to whine about piracy ruining your career. you don’t need piracy’s help.

@IvanBrandon on this post http://t.co/2VG5tQB1 on a second look, does it require a WordPress login?
I’m with you on this. the other day I saw on Twitter a former Marvel editor, recently laid-off, blaming his firing readers who download illegal comics. =S
I feel for him but that’s barking at the wrong tree.
